From Human Resources to 31 years with Hilton Worldwide as General Manager and Area General Manager, I spent my career building high-achieving teams and mentoring individuals to realize their dream career.
My future retirement looked wonderful - but the reality was far from what I expected. Changing from a fast-paced schedule of financial reviews, sales briefings, meetings and deadlines to zero left me feeling isolated and without a structured routine.
Like many, I found my mental health suffered, and losing several colleagues left me determined that no one should face these challenges alone.
Businesses are keen to train you to undertake a role when you are on the up, but what support is there when you are about to finish your career and be fully prepared for that well-earned retirement?
Over The Horizon is a community project - not financial advice. Just practical, friendly support to design a retirement you actually want to live.
You will find my approach frank and honest shaping a future I'm now living day-to-day and enjoying every minute. This is far from what I thought possible several years ago.
Retirement is a big change, and it helps to have a bit of structure and company while you find your feet. Over four relaxed, small-group sessions (6 people max) we turn that "what now?" feeling into a clear, practical plan.
Held weekly at Waverley, with tea, biscuits and honest conversation.
Week 1: Clearing The View — Where You Are & What Matters
We start by normalising it. Most people are surprised by retirement — the loss of routine, identity, and togetherness. We look at where you are now and what really matters to you going forward. You'll leave with your Energy Audit and Top 5 Values.
Week 2: A Week You Want To Wake Up To
This is the favourite. We design a week you actually look forward to — movement, people, purpose, rest and time for you. Not a rigid timetable, just a simple one-page picture of a good week.
Week 3: Anchors & Crew — Staying Well & Connected
Good weeks only stick with good anchors. We cover two simple daily non-negotiables for wellbeing, and who energises you vs drains you. We also look at how to find the right volunteering or contribution — using three simple tests.
Week 4: Your Horizon Plan
We pull it all together into your one-page Horizon Plan. No big group sharing unless you want to — you share in pairs. You leave with a plan you can put on the fridge, plus ideas for keeping it alive.
What’s included: Workbook, all materials, venue.
Cost: £40 for the 4 weeks — £20 covers venue, printing and materials, and I personally donate £20 to Age UK to support older people in our community.
Small, confidential, local — and no PowerPoint.
